Project Description

This is "The Multimedia Signal Processing and Security Lab", short WaveLab, website. We are a research group at the Artificial Intelligence and Human Interfaces (AIHI) Department of the University of Salzburg led by Andreas Uhl. Our research is focused on Visual Data Processing and associated security questions. Most of our work is currently concentrated on Biometrics, Media Forensics and Media Security, Medical Image and Video Analysis, and application oriented fundamental research in digital humanities, individualised aquaculture and sustainable wood industry.

Innovating Secure and Efficient Border Management Through Vehicle-Integrated Technologies (AUTOBORDER)

Project Description:

Innovating Secure and Efficient Border Management Through Vehicle-Integrated Technologies (AUTOBORDER) is a Horizon Research and Innovation Action aiming to develop a next-generation drive-through border control system that enables fast, seamless, and secure identity verification for travellers in vehicles. By combining biometric identification, digital travel credentials, advanced risk assessment, and in-vehicle sensors integrated with vehicles’ Infotainment and Control Electronics (ICE) systems, the system will greatly reduce waiting time while maintaining security standards at EU external borders. The project will implement Digital Travel Credentials (DTCs) and pre-registration systems. This technology will not only streamline the border-crossing process but also enhance passenger security through identity monitoring, real-time alerts for unauthorised access, and threat detection analytics. Compliance with GDPR, the AI Act, EU travel regulations, and ethical standards is a priority, backed by a dedicated legal partner. Pilot studies are planned at two EU Border Control Points: UK-France and Moldova-Romania.

The project is led by CERTH, the Centre of Research & Technology Hellas, and the consortium consists of 14 international partners. The Salzburg group is mainly engaged in the biometric recognition technology, including questions of in-vehicle sensor setup, actual multi-modal recognition, and biometric security and privacy.
